Documenti e medaglie SS-Geb. Pi. Batl. 13 “Handschar” aprile/maggio 1945

Interessante e rarissimo lotto di soldbuch, documenti e medaglie appartenuto a Johann Thiel, un caporalmaggiore (SS-Rottenführer) delle Waffen-SS in servizio nel SS-Gebirgs-Pionier-Bataillon “H”, unità pionieri della celebre 13° divisione SS “Handschar”, tra il 1944 e il 1945. Il soldbuch, con le rune SS sulla cover, è abbastanza vissuto ed è privo di foto, ma è completo e con un discreto numero di ingressi. Oltre al libretto, sono stati recuperati il grado da manica e le due decorazioni ottenute dal soldato: il distintivo per ferito in classe nera (verwundetenabzeichen in schwarz) e la medaglia al valore in classe argento (Kleine Silberne Tapferkeitsmedaille) dello stato di Croazia (Ante Pavelic). Del distintivo da ferito è presente anche il relativo diploma, firmato il 25 aprile 1945, mentre sappiamo dal soldbuch (pag. 30) che la medaglia Ante-Pavelic gli è stata data il giorno della fine della guerra (7 maggio 1945). tra i documenti figurano anche due lettere del 1946 da cui apprendiamo che dopo la guerra era trattenuto a Rimini (Italia) come prigioniero di guerra POW. Lotto particolarmente iconico ed affascinante: non capita certo tutti i giorni di vedere materiale SS “Handschar” nominativo e con medaglie assegnate alla fine della guerra!

Interesting and extremely rare lot of soldbuch, documents, and medals belonging to Johann Thiel, a senior corporal (SS-Rottenführer) of the Waffen-SS, serving in the SS-Gebirgs-Pionier-Bataillon H, the pioneer unit of the renowned 13th SS Division “Handschar,” between 1944 and 1945. The soldbuch, bearing the SS runes on the cover, is well-used and lacks a photo, but is complete with a fair number of entries. In addition to the booklet, the lot includes the sleeve rank insignia and two awards earned by the soldier: the Black Wound Badge (Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz) and the Silver Bravery Medal (Kleine Silberne Tapferkeitsmedaille) of the Croatian state (Ante Pavelić). The wound badge comes with its certificate, signed on April 25, 1945, while the soldbuch (page 30) notes that the Ante-Pavelić medal was awarded on May 7, 1945, the day the war ended. Documents also include two letters from 1946 revealing that after the war he was held as a POW in Rimini, Italy. A particularly iconic and fascinating lot: it is very rare to see named Handschar material complete with medals awarded at the very end of the war!
