British colonial pith “Polo helmet”

Rare British colonial “polo” helmet dating to the 1940s. The helmet was manufactured in England by the prestigious Bates Hatters of London and was subsequently retailed in Egypt by a distributor based in Cairo. Although originally intended for civilian and sporting use, helmets of this type were also commonly worn by British Army officers stationed in Africa. The white leather chinstrap trim has become somewhat stiff and shows some damage (see photos), but the helmet is otherwise preserved in excellent overall condition.

Raro casco coloniale inglese modello “polo” databile a ridosso della Seconda guerra mondiale. Il casco venne prodotto in Inghilterra dalla prestigiosa casa Bates Hatters di Londra, per poi essere rivenduto in Egitto da un distributore del Cairo. Questi caschi, pur nascendo per scopi sportivi/civili, erano tipicamente indossati anche dagli ufficiali dell’esercito di stanza in Africa. La guarnizione bianca del soggolo è un po’ indurita e danneggiata (vedesi foto) ma il casco complessivamente si preserva in eccellenti condizioni.
